Three Words Every Person Should Know To Be Successful in 2011

Chris Brogan is President of New Marketing Labs, a new media marketing agency. He works with large and mid-sized companies to improve online business communications like marketing and PR.

The great Chris Brogan says,

“Every year, I come up with three words that will be my guiding pillars for what I will focus on in the coming year. Instead of resolutions, which don’t usually help me very much, I work hard on using these words as a lighthouse for my actions and efforts.”

I was so inspired when I read Chris Brogan’s blog post entitled “My 3 Words for 2011”, that I created my own three words for 2011! What a great idea it is to choose three words as your guide posts for the year, to help you stay grounded and focused on your specific goals. The three words that you choose, help you to know when to say ‘yes’, and when to say ‘no’ to various opportunities that arise throughout the year. All you have to do is ask yourself, does this person, job, opportunity, or activity, fall in alignment with at least one of my three words for this year? If the answer is yes, then go for it! If the answer is no, then, the answer is no.

Here are my three words for 2011, and the reason behind them:

1) Grow I want to grow significantly this year in every area of my life, including; as a dancer, radio/tv personality, writer, business owner, wife, and as a spiritual person in my faith. Any activities or opportunities that will lead me to growth in these areas, are perfect for me.

2) CollaborateAll great, successful people didn’t get to where they are alone. A prime example of this would be Oprah, and her new OWN television network. It is fantastic! But she could not do it alone. I recognize that it is imperative to collaborate with others in order for my business to grow, and in order for me to have the maximum, positive impact on my industry, and the world.

3) Discern – I can’t do it all, and I’m not meant to do everything that comes my way. I must discern. My time is valuable, and my purpose is directed by God. Therefore, I must only do things that are in alignment with my values, my mission, and my purpose. This means that, I will not overwhelm my schedule with things that are not in harmony with my goals and my focus.

So, those are my three words for 2011. What are yours? Chris Brogan posted a ton of other people’s three words on his blog, so feel free to check them out for inspiration.
