“The way to hit the target is to see it clearly. Know precisely what you seek to do, to be, to create, stay focused on it, and make it real.” ~ Ralph Marston
The new year is in full effect, and it’s time to get started on the road to create a memorable, fantastic, and mind-blowing year of success for your career, business, and personal life. There are so many ways for you to get focused and set your goals for the year. Some people write out one word, or three words that will be their theme for the year. While others write down a complete action plan, with their specific goals, how they will accomplish them, and the specific deadlines they’ve set for each item.
However you choose to get the year started on the right foot, I recommend one thing, and one thing alone.
Keep it simple.
Your goals, plans, and purpose should be so clear, and simple, that you can call them out when you first wake up in the morning, before you’ve had your coffee, orange juice, tea, or whatever you have to wake you up in the morning. They should be so clear and simple that, you can easily write them down while speaking to someone on the phone, watching tv, and playing with your dog.
The point is, less is more. Keep your goals short, sweet, clear, and concise. By doing this, you will be able to quickly discern what things will help you to reach your goals for this year, and what things sound good, but would only ultimately be a distraction away from what you want to accomplish.
I’ve found that the things I say no to, are even more important than what I say yes to. Saying no to one thing, is essentially me saying yes to my personal and professional goals, and helping me to stay focused on those things, and those things alone.
Remember, there is only so much time in a day, week, month, so everything you do counts. How many hours you spend watching tv, on e-mail, on Facebook, working for free, working on projects that drain you, and leave you feeling empty, etc. They all take your time, energy, and focus. So, if you haven’t already, take a moment to think about what your top 3, specific goals are for this year, and remove those things from your life that will not directly help you to accomplish those specific goals. Doing this will help to guarantee that you reach your goals, and fulfill your purpose for this year.
The Top Three Ways To Have An Incredibly Successful and Fabulous 2012:
“Learn to take risks in life. If you win, you can lead, and if you lose, you can guide.”~ Brittney Moses
1) Take Risks – How will you ever know what is possible, if you never take a risk, and try. There aren’t too many guarantees in life, and at the end of the day, what do you have to lose? Just go for it!
“It takes courage to BE who you really are. Choosing to live out your purpose is more powerful than you realize.” ~ Marshawn Evans
2) Put Yourself Out There – We all want to be liked and accepted, and hey, no one likes to be judged or criticized. But, the only way to reach your full potential, and experience the success of your dreams, is to put yourself out there. Yeah, you may encounter some haters, but the rewards of putting yourself out there outweigh the stress of possible criticism or negative feedback.
“When you do what you can do, God will show up and do what you can’t do.” ~ Joel Osteen
3) Feel The Fear, Do It Anyway – It’s always scary to try something new or different, and step into the unknown. But that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t still do that thing that scares you. That’s where the most awesome things happen! Right outside your comfort zone.

Really great piece, Ashani! I WAS able to describe my MAIN goal when you posed the question. Surprisingly, I am following your primary point this time out. Keep it simple. At the end of 2011 one of my goals was not going as well as I hoped for my Jan, 2012 launch. An exciting “shiny” opportunity dropped in to my inbox. Although I could have likely rushed and made the deadline, my business too new, and it would have taken me off track of my main event and the sponsorship I wish to obtain for it. I decided to let it go, and remain on track for what is really my main event in 2012, 5mos. away. More opportunities will come, especially if my first is great!
Awesome Peg! That’s what I’m talking about! You re on the right track! Those “shiny” opportunities can end up being a curse when it’s not the right time. It was very wise of you to be able to see the bigger picture, and make such a decision. As my dad used to say, “keep your eyes on the prize”. Excited for a great year ahead Peg!
