Social Media Success for Dance Studios – How To Use Twitter

This is Day #4 in our 90-Day Social Media Success Challenge for Dance Studios/Dance Businesses. Today, we will discuss how to use Twitter as part of your social media marketing. Twitter is another micro-blogging, social media site (similar to Facebook) that allows you to connect with people in your area, industry, and beyond. There’s a lot that you can learn and gain through your interactions on Twitter.

Here are 5 Tips on how to use Twitter:

1) Follow people – This is the first step in using Twitter once you open an account. You can do a search for “dance” or any other name or topic, and begin following people. Most people will automatically follow you back, and you’ve now begun getting Twitter followers. Just be careful to keep the number of people that you’re following, and the number of people that are following you within a close range. For example, you don’t want to be following 800 people, and only have 50 followers. Start small, and grow your following little by little. You should also promote your Twitter page on Facebook, in your e-newsletter, on your website/blog, and in your e-mail signature.

2) Open a Hootsuite account– This will enable you to manage your Facebook and Twitter accounts from one place. You can make one update, and have it automatically be sent to Facebook and Twitter. You can also schedule your updates to go out at various times of the day that you choose. Hootsuite (http://hootsuite.com) also allows you to view any @mentions (other Twitter followers who are talking about you) of your account and also view your direct messages.

3) Re-Tweet – If you see an update that you like, a great quote, something related to dance, or something in your industry that interests you or your followers, Re-tweet or “RT” it. This allows more people to view an update, and gives an opportunity for the person who made the update to have access to new followers. People also appreciate that you like their Tweet enough to Re-Tweet it, and it helps to start a conversation and build relationships.

4) Say “Thank You” – Now that you know how to use Twitter, be sure to show appreciation to your followers when they mention your name in an update (@username), or Re-tweet (RT) one of your updates. This is all a part of building a rapport and building relationships with your followers.

5) Follow FridayEvery Friday is Follow Friday on Twitter, also known as #ff. This is when your followers recommend people for you to follow. You can recommend as many people as you like, and also Re-Tweet other people’s recommendations, and gain access to new followers. All you have to do is put #ff and @username (whatever the person’s Twitter username is), into an update, and you’re on your way.

This was a very basic overview on how to use Twitter. If you have more questions about how to use Twitter for your dance studio or dance business, please leave a comment here with your question, and join our 90-Day Social Media Success Challenge for Dance Studios.
