What Is The Finance Your Dance Movement?

You may think I’m crazy. Actually, I think I’m crazy half the time. But let me explain why I started the Finance Your Dance movement.

Several years ago, I reached a crossroads. I had been working as a professional dancer, performing, choreographing, and teaching, among other jobs and gigs, and I was sick and tired. I just couldn’t imagine my future continuing on the road that I was on, teaching dance classes, and performing, which was all great, but never really having any financial stability, or hope for financial stability in my field. As you know, as a dancer you go from gig to gig to gig most of the time. And as a dance teacher, you don’t have much stability either because you get paid by the hour, as an independent contractor, which means, no paid sick days, holidays, or vacation time. And of course, no medical or dental benefits to be seen.

Some dancers would argue that, “It’s all worth it to be able to do what you love“, but I beg to differ. I’ve always desired more than the “struggling artist” lifestyle, and I’ve always known that I was destined for more than that, and not just for myself, but for other dance artists as well. I realized that it was time for a change.

My first stint as an entrepreneur was running a dance teacher staffing company, where I helped dance teachers get jobs, and dance studio owners and arts organizations find teachers to hire for their studios or programs. It was quite an exciting journey, and I was able to help hundreds of dance teachers get jobs, and provide support for many dance studios, schools, and arts organizations during that time.

However, after getting more involved in social media back in 2009,  and also through some tough experiences, soul-searching, and reflection, I realized that I had a true passion and knack for marketing, branding, social media, and multimedia. So, I started this blog in 2009, then started my weekly Let’s Talk Dance radio show and weekly Let’s Talk Dance Tweetchat in 2010, and the rest they say, is history.

This year, I had the pleasure of helping some awesome dance and non-dance related artists establish their brands online, and create social media marketing plans that helped them to dive into the world of social media in an impactful & significant way. I also reached a personal and professional milestone this year, when I began hosting and executive producing my own tv show, Inside New York City Dance.

It’s been an awesome journey thus far, and I just really want to continue to empower, encourage, and educate as many dance artists as possible, and help you find your inner greatness and purpose, and find your prosperity within that. Marketing, branding, and social media are really important aspects of growing a profitable brand, and a prosperous career,  so these are areas that you need to become very knowledgeable in.

God has given you your talents and gifts, not just so that you can barely get by, and tell yourself, “I may not have money, but at least I’m doing what I love“. No, not at all. You can do what you love, what you are most passionate about, AND have money, and financial stability as well. Why not? You have to believe that it’s possible, before you can see it begin to happen. People are doing it every day.

What is the Finance Your Dance Movement?

In a nutshell, it’s a movement that I created to empower dance artists of all kinds, to actively become knowledgeable about marketing, branding, and finance, in order to create a fulfilling, and prosperous lifestyle. In short…

The Finance Your Dance movement is about turning your passion and purpose into a profitable, and fulfilling lifestyle, so that you can positively impact the world, and no longer live your life as a struggling artist.

Finance Your Dance Affirmation

This will require a major mind shift in the dance community. We have to expect more, demand more from ourselves, learn more, and become more, so that we can start to create the type of financial stability and prosperity that we’ve been told is impossible for dance artists. Let’s shift our minds, and start to believe that we can be and do more. Let’s recognize that innovation in technology and social media have created a new opportunity for us: an opportunity where we have the ability to create new, residual and passive income streams that were not possible before.

Like I said at the beginning of this article, you may think I’m crazy. Lord knows I think I am half the time. But if you believe that you are a dancer, and NOT a struggling artist, and that you are a powerful and profitable brand, then I’d like to welcome you to the Finance Your Dance movement. You are in!
