“So You Think You Can Judge Dance” Via The New York Times
| |“So You Think You Can Judge Dance”
I read this article by Elaine Stewart, on nytimes.com, after seeing someone post it on Twitter. I thought it was a very well-rounded, and accurate commentary on how professional dancers really feel about the television show, ‘So You Think You Can Dance’.
It features commentary from five, highly successful, professional dancers, who are at the top of their game including: Tiler Peck, a New York City Ballet Principal dancer, Tap dancer and “Stomp” cast member Michelle Dorrance, Dallas McMurray, a member of the Mark Morris Dance Group; Anthony Rue II, the hip-hop dancer/choreographer/artist known as “Ant Boogie”, and Brittany Marcin, a former Rockette who is now appearing in the Broadway revival of “Follies.”
They all sat down in a Brooklyn apartment, and shared their thoughts and feelings on one of the recent episodes of ‘So You Think You Can Dance‘. I think you’ll find this article quite interesting, and eye-opening.
One of my favorite quotes from the article is, “These dancers wouldn’t stand up to dancers in New York” stated by Brittany Marcin.
What do you think about ‘So You Think You Can Dance‘?
Do you think it’s really helping dancers, and creating more interest within the dance landscape from non-dancers?
Do you think that this interest and excitement will translate into more funding for dance companies, and better paying jobs for dancers?

nobody likes their competition
I think competition can be healthy if approached in the right way. Your competition can motivate you. But at the end of the day, you have to give respect where respect is due, and if someone is a phenomenal dancer, you should recognize that. That’s my opinion. 🙂
These five people are just jealous that they would never win the show. What a joke they are. Taking time out of their day to hate on other dancers and the show. Noone would ever make it in New York??? Many contestants were already on broadway. Mark is Gagas head dancer. What snobs. I will never support them (although I do know their names now for the first time)
I think that these five dancers are successful in their own right, which is why they were chosen for this ny times article. We have to give them credit for their success. I don’t think they were hating on the dancers on the show, I think that they were just sharing a different perspective than most people think of. At the end of the day, everyone is entitled to their opinion. People have different reasons for doing shows like So You Think You Can Dance. It works well for some, not for all. I think what matters most is that we recognize the talent and hard work that it takes to get on that show, support our fellow dancers, and always keep the energy in the dance community on a positive note.
This is the famouse dance show, even on the other country theyre making a versions of this show..
